What is a physiological adaptation and behavior of a deep water body?
What is a physiological adaptation and behavior of a deep water body? Please give examples.
Behavioral tendency to live near hydrothermal vents – bacteria grow around these areas rich in minerals, and provide food for higher trophic levels. ie. filter feeders like clams eat bacteria, then the crabs eat clams. physiologic bioluminescence (although this could also be a behavioral adaptation depends on how you approach IT), for example, monkfish (Melanocetus johnsoni) and many other deep sea fish, or low metabolic rate and therefore lower growth rate. The last two points could be due to constant low temperatures, limited food supplies, high pressures or conditions in general, just fear down there, but I'm not entirely sure there – we'd need to read more about it to find out.
