The future of music: Music Games

The music labels continue to search for new ways to make money in the face of declining CD sales. The sales of digital songs, such as Apple's iTunes Music Store were up 27 percent from 2007, breaking the mark of $ 1 billion for the first time in 2008. But, according to Nielsen SoundScan, only 428 million albums (including LPs, CDs, and online albums) were sold – up 14 percent from 2007. As recently and 2005, sold 619 million albums. Meanwhile, there are more options than ever to listen to music free online, including MySpace Music, Imeem, Last.fm, Pandora. It seems clear that demand music goes towards the day when the free broadcasting and wherever people want to hear, and the labels and artists have to find ways to create music experiences for their fans who are willing to spend money.

What people have always been willing to pay is an experience only where they can interact with the music of an artist in a way that can not be copied for free. For example, fans love to see live music because they can not repeat the experience at home. Ringtones have been popular for more than a decade. People are still willing to pay to join fan clubs, due to advantages such as a relationship more closely with the artist.

One of the most promising areas for music revenue growth is to combine music with games. There have been more 30 million downloads of songs in Rock Band, because the fans want to rock to your favorite songs in the game. Guitar Hero has had more than 40 million downloads and is now an excess of $ 2B. What is remarkable is that the players have shown a willingness to pay for individual songs for use in music games though often costs twice the price of a normal digital download. In fact, says Aerosmith have made more money from licensing their music to Guitar Hero than any of the previous albums the group recorded. Even digital holdouts, The Beatles, will launch a version of Rock Band of theirs. More music games will be coming soon, including the band Hero (for family gaming) and DJ Hero, which offers games record turntables and scratching in a battle for victory in a virtual nightclub.

Other music games include popular Dance Dance Revolution, Jam Legend, and Tap Tap Revolution is one of the best-selling applications for the iPhone. SingStar is a series of competitive karaoke video game that requires players to sing along with the music to score points in order. Loudcrowd offers a steady stream of music provides a connected series of music themed games. Through play and interaction with others, users can earn or buy a variety of virtual goods, including clothes for her nature and music tracks that can be picked for the game and competition within the site. Best selling artists Fall Out Boy created an artist FriendsorEnemies.com game theme. Even lo-fi games like lottery tickets are jumping on the bandwagon of music. In the summer tour of Aerosmith fans can win backstage passes, more row seats, and maybe an extra few million dollars in lottery playing Aerosmith branded games.

With the rise of popular casual games on sites like Facebook, Addicting Games and Miniclip, along with the universal appeal of music is a natural fit for the two are united. Music games will give the seals a new way to earn money users have shown their willingness to pay. It seems clear that more will follow.
